  • Chronic heavy drinkers will often have dilated veins in the esophagus, signs of liver disease, and brain damage; another common symptom of constant excessive drinking is a loss of cognitive function.
  • Young married women show the greatest decreases in alcohol consumption, and married men, compared with men in all other categories of living arrangements have the fewest increases.
  • Alcoholism is a destructive pattern of alcohol use that includes a number of symptoms, including tolerance to or withdrawal from the substance, using more alcohol and/or for a longer time than planned, and trouble reducing its use.
  • "Social use" of alcohol consists of an occasional drink in the company of friends: a glass of champagne at a wedding, a cold beer after a softball game, or a glass of fine wine with a meal; social drinking has not been shown to kill brain cells, nor is there any research that indicates that occasionally having an alcoholic beverage adversely affects any major body organ.
